3 Reasons Your Home’s Electrical Water Heater May Be Overheating

There are a couple of signs you could look out for to prevent or catch an overheating electrical water heater before it causes any problems.

If you have ever experienced a surprise cold shower, you might understand the importance of a properly working water heater in your home. However, electric water heater issues can be more than just irritating. They could also lead to some potential health hazards. One of the most potentially dangerous issues with electric water heaters could happen from overheating. When overheating happens, it can burn or scald people in your household. In addition, overheating could permanently harm the water heater, which could cost you money to replace or repair the unit. However, the solid news is that there are a couple of signs you could look out for to prevent or catch an overheating electrical water heater before it causes any problems. Read on to learn more!

Too Much Pressure in the Electrical Water Heater

If your pressure relief valve is not working correctly, it could lead to severe damage. Steam buildup inside of the tank of your electric water heater could cause some bodily harm in the case of a tank burst. If you see signs of water boiling inside of your tank, contact a reliable and reputable plumber and turn off the power to the electric water heater as soon as you can.

High Water Temperatures

We highly recommend keeping the thermostat within your hot water tank to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, but occasionally the settings could be changed and set too high. When you are troubleshooting an overheating issue, checking the thermostat is typically a great place to start. If you find the water heater temperature set above 120 degrees, try dialing it down to see if it fixes the issue.

Buildup of Sediment

The heating elements inside your electronic water heater are prone to a buildup of various sediment buildup, either on the bottom of the tank or surrounding the heating elements. When this occurs, the water heater has to work harder, which might result in overheating. If this ever happens, it could lead to the heating elements within the unit failing, which could be a costly repair too.
